Japan demanded that the UN "correct" the world map showing the Kuril Islands as belonging to Russia

The Japanese government has spoken out against the UN's new world map.

This map was introduced to transition to the modern "Equal Earth" projection, which corrects distortions regarding the relative sizes of continents and countries.

However, the Japanese government was dissatisfied with the color used for Russia in the area of the Kuril Islands and lodged a protest demanding a correction.

According to Tokyo, the map could "spread misconceptions regarding the territorial sovereignty of the islands."
