UK releases 700 prisoners early amid prison overcrowding crisis

British authorities began the first phase of an early prisoner release program on Thursday, aimed at easing pressure on the country's jails. In this stage, around 700 inmates will be released, while approximately 5,000 more will be freed gradually over the coming year.

The first releases took place at various prisons across England and Wales. Some inmates celebrated their release in front of the media and thanked the government, while others expressed uncertainty about their future.

Authorities maintain that the measure is necessary to prevent the collapse of the prison system, which currently holds more than 87,000 inmates.

The initiative has drawn criticism from the opposition and victims' organizations, which warn of potential risks to public safety.

The Ministry of Justice stated that those released will be subject to strict supervision measures, including electronic monitoring and movement restrictions, and emphasized that offenders convicted of certain serious crimes are excluded from the program.
