25th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks

 

Today marks the 25th anniversary of the 2001 terrorist attacks. Commemorative ceremonies honoring the victims were held in New York and at the Pentagon.

At the memorial in Lower Manhattan, relatives of the victims read out the names of the deceased. At exactly 8:46 a.m., people observed a minute of silence—the precise moment, 25 years ago, when the first plane struck the North Tower.

This year, a new, seventh minute of silence was added. It is dedicated to those who died later from illnesses linked to the attacks and the work performed at the site of the tragedy.

 At the Pentagon, the ceremony took place in the building's inner courtyard. U.S. President Donald Trump attended this year, reportedly in part because political speeches are not permitted at the New York ceremony, and Trump wished to deliver an address. Meanwhile, Vice President J.D. Vance was attending the ceremony in New York.
