More than 70,000 tents were flooded due to heavy, torrential rains in the Gaza Strip, a representative of the Palestinian enclave’s authorities told the Maan news agency.
"Tens of thousands of displaced people are in flooded areas and are in need of urgent assistance. <...> The heavy, torrential rains and gusty winds over the last 12 hours have caused a sharp deterioration in an already catastrophic humanitarian situation," the official noted.
Furthermore, it was reported that in several locations, soil erosion and flooding have caused temporary structures to collapse, leaving people affected.
Civil defense teams in the Gaza Strip are evacuating residents from refugee camps, and rescue workers have received more than 1,500 calls.
Some 90% of Gaza residents have been displaced by the Israeli war against Hamas, many of them multiple times, with limited access to clean water and sanitation.
Aid agencies say the situation is likely to worsen with the start of the rainy season.
